“Hope is a survival trait, and without it, we perish.” The good news is that the right whale population for 2023 rose to 372. In 2022, there were 367 right whales, an increase of 1.9%. The 2023 increase in population included 12 whale calves.
We have humpback and grey whales with similar changing habitat and migration patterns showing up dead in collisions with container ships that need to be informed, slowed, monitored, and cited in the migration channels on the west coast amidst jurisdictional conflicts between NOAA and coast guard. Expanding the marine sanctuaries would help too. The whales are saying, slow down, you move too fast.

YES. On the East Coast, more humpbacks than right whales are suffering ship strikes.
